What they don’t tell you…
As a martial arts instructor, I appreciate the renewed interest that “mixed martial arts” has brought to martial arts schools in general. An interesting by product that has emerged from this is the advent of attached jujitsu, muay thai or “mixed martial arts” classes that have began to permeate your basic martial arts programs.
But what is it that they don’t tell you?
Brazilian Jujitsu: Doesn’t address multiple attackers or weapons. While you are arm barring or putting a kamora on one guy another is kicking you in the head.
The ground or a non-paved alley is a lot different than a padded dojo. How often do you have class outside? Never…hmmmm.
You can be proficient, semi-proficient or suck on the ground and still move horribly standing up. If all fights allegedly end up on the ground, where do they start?
At bad jujitsu schools most of the “rolling” consists of you laying there while an advanced guy has is way with you, and works his own material. At the same time, another guy with a thick accent barks illegible commands that you don’t understand anyway. Where’s the bang for your buck?
Muay Thai: You fight like you train. If you are taught to hit to the face with your fists expect to get cuts and gashes in your knuckles from your attackers face and mouth and share all of his blood borne diseases.
Those high power kicks don’t work so well on grass or gravel. Can you say, ”I’ve fallen and I can’t get up..”
Kicking with bare feet is a lot different that kicking in shoes. How often is class held with shoes on? Never….hmmmm. Can’t mess up those pretty mats.
