Now is the time...

If you are currently training in the Houston area and you believe there is more to the martial arts than what you're experiencing...you are correct.

I encourage anyone taking TKD, Tang Soo Do, Shorin Ryu, Shotokan, Aikido, Krav Maga, etc...to experience the evolution of American Karate. It is time to elevate your understanding of the martial sciences. Come take a class and see what American Kenpo is all about.

No heavy sell, no pressure, drop ins welcome..

Call, Ask, Try, Decide...what do you have to lose? vs What do you have to gain?

2009 Testimonials

In only a few months of taking his class I have had great results. Mr. Bugg stresses fundamentals and precision. I have taken many different forms of martial arts and he is one of the best instructors I have encountered. He teaches the class so that all participants fill included. It would be hard to take a class from him and not leave without learning something. I find the class challenging but encouraging. I have not been excited about martial arts in a long time. Taking American Kenpo with Mr. Bugg has renewed my old goal of earning my black belt.  ~ Jesse O.

After several years of non-training in the martial arts, I decided it was time to get back into the swing of things. I researched several schools in the Houston area, but after talking to Mr. Bugg on the phone regarding his class, I felt this was the way to go. I have been training now for several months, and have enjoyed the entire process. His instruction is friendly and laid back, but at the same time, serious and well structured. If you are seeking a detailed and extremely informative martial art atmosphere, in a small class setting, then this is it. ~ Ron B.

4 Common Myths.."Why I can't do/ don't need Karate..."

1) I'm too out of shape to take Karate. This is the most common and least true of all the excuses. It's not like lining up for a marathon where you have to train for months previously before participating. The martial arts are about self development and self improvement. A beach body is not a prerequisite.

2) I would never "fit in"...The list of participants are long and varied. From firefighters and law enforcement officers to admin assistants, IT techs, chef's and teachers of all nationalities and genders. Everyone can have a common  interest in protecting themselves without losing who they are.

3) I own a gun/pepper spray or my husband will take care of me. Chance favors the prepared mind. Wouldn't it be good to not have to depend on those uncontrollable external factors that might not be at hand one late night...protect yourself and your family with principles and concepts of motion that don't require you to have been an athlete in high school.

4) I don't believe in violence and could never raise my hand to another. I deeply respect your position, but I also respect your right to protect yourself and your family. What would your family do without you? Failing to prepare is preparing to fail. Life gives you the test (which sometimes may be violent and jarring), from there the lessons are taught. See me before you feel like you have too or if you've taken that test and you didn't like your score the first time. It is now time to reclaim yourself. This is real. Kenpo teaches both those attributes that allow one to survive confrontation and avoid it.

What they don’t tell you…

As a martial arts instructor, I appreciate the renewed interest that “mixed martial arts” has brought to martial arts schools in general. An interesting by product that has emerged from this is the advent of attached jujitsu, muay thai or “mixed martial arts” classes that have began to permeate your basic martial arts programs.

But what is it that they don’t tell you?

  • Brazilian Jujitsu: Doesn’t address multiple attackers or weapons. While you are arm barring or putting a kamora on one guy another is kicking you in the head.

  • The ground or a non-paved alley is a lot different than a padded dojo. How often do you have class outside? Never…hmmmm.

  • You can be proficient, semi-proficient or suck on the ground and still move horribly standing up. If all fights allegedly end up on the ground, where do they start?

  • At bad jujitsu schools most of the “rolling” consists of you laying there while an advanced guy has is way with you, and works his own material. At the same time, another guy with a thick accent barks illegible commands that you don’t understand anyway. Where’s the bang for your buck?

  • Muay Thai: You fight like you train. If you are taught to hit to the face with your fists expect to get cuts and gashes in your knuckles from your attackers face and mouth and share all of his blood borne diseases.

  • Those high power kicks don’t work so well on grass or gravel. Can you say, ”I’ve fallen and I can’t get up..”

  • Kicking with bare feet is a lot different that kicking in shoes. How often is class held with shoes on? Never….hmmmm. Can’t mess up those pretty mats.

American Kenpo & IMUA address conflict logically with our eyes wide open and not closed to the realities of predators and pray. Can you really afford not to? Call Now 713-837-6287
